Wrestler of the Month
May 2007
Doug Vollaro
Age - 12

Hometown - Somers, CT
Picking Doug as the wrestler of the month for March is based on a couple of good reasons. The first being his dedication to the sport of wrestling.Which includes his daily training sessions at The Northeast Elite Training Center. Doug is being constantly challenge by all the High School aged wrestlers and is always up for that challenge. He also seeks out opportunity in and out of the NE ETC. always looking to improve his skills. Doug at such a young age has found a sport he truly loves and has the support of his whole family behind him. The Vollaro's are a familiar sight at every training session and very rarely do you not find at least one of the three boys at a session. Doug has come a long way from the first day he came rolling into his first NE Elite session to the wrestler he is today. Now although Doug is only 12 due to his size he is never with any one even close to his age and he seems to like that just fine. Doug is a little on the mean side on the mat and approaches every take down or scrabble like if he was fighting for the last cookie from his brothers, but off the mat he is kind and considerate well beyond his years. He is only twelve and at times I even forget that. It is going to be fun watching Doug grow into a fine young man and I am excited knowing that the Northeast Elite Wrestling Club will have one of the future BIG wrestling standouts training out of our club. Doug is also a member of the Somers Youth Wrestling program and coming to us from such afine program as Somers and Coach Zachery had him more than prepared to make the transition from his program into ours. I am thankful that Somers is the next town over from the NE ETC and look forward to being involved with more of Scott's wrestlers for years to come! Congratulation Doug! Coach Powers

Mike Powers
Junior 160lb
Age: 18

Mike Powers
I have known Mike and the Powers family for 4 years and so there are many more qualified to write this bio than me. You could have asked one of the hundreds of coaches who have seen him wrestle over the years. Or perhaps one of his teammates from the many elite teams that he has been a member of. Or finally you could have one of his countless opponents tell you about their experiences with Mike on the mat. All would say Mike is a quiet gentleman with incredible talent who is a fierce competitor. His wrestling accomplishments are to numerous to list here. As a youth wrestler he was unequaled in the state of CT and many other states for that matter. He was the first to elicit that phrase from coaches, fathers and wrestlers alike, “Oh no, you have that kid from CT”. But whether he was in Tulsa or State College or Fargo or Reno or some small town in PA that his dad heard might have some competition, Mike always comes to wrestle.

So as he begins this new era of his life and wresting career, we at NEETC salute him. He is the first Member from the club to be accepted on scholarship to a Division I school. And because of his family’s dedication to the sport, he won’t be the last. Although I will miss him for the time he spent helping my son and the youth wrestlers in our club, I’m happy to see him fulfill a destiny that has taken so much hard work. There are many reasons to be proud of Mike but as his Mom, Dad and Brother will tell you the best reason is because of the young man he has become.

Coach Malone

We at The Northeast Elite Training Center congratulate Coach Shirzad on another great wrestling accomplishment. This added to all the other titles he holds puts him on the top of any list of wrestler still wrestling that I know of. We are very lucky that he makes time from his very busy schedule/life style of wrestling to run training sessions at the Northeast Elite Training Center when he is not competing somewhere in the USA or in the world. It's great to see wrestlers of all ages waiting to get a chance to wrestle Shirzad and he never lets them down. I have seen him hit wrestling moves that no one else would even dream of hitting. He is and always will be a welcome sight coming through the our doors! Once again Shirzad Congratulations, I have said that to you more than any other wrestler I know!  Coach Powers

Wrestler of the Month
July 2006
Tim Vollaro
Cadet 165lb
Age: 15

Tim is a great example of The Northeast Elite Training Center's Team of Teams concept. He was introduced to wrestling and showed up ready to go at our club because of Scott Zachery and the Somers Youth Wrestling Program and all the volunteers of that program that have been very quietly developing a core group of athletes that have begun to impact the wrestling scene and will continue to do so in the future. We at the Northeast Elite Training Center have had the pleasure of working with one of these wrestlers (Tim) and through all his hard work and dedication to the sport of wrestling has achieved a level of wrestling that brings us to proudly naming Tim Vollaro the wrestler of the month for June. Tim is one of three Vollaro brothers that I am fortunate to have training with us because of the Team Affiliation Program (TAP) with the Town of Somers wrestling program. Tim gets better after each training session and after every live match, keep in mind he's in here a lot and does his share of traveling, you do the math! I have enjoyed working with Tim take great pride in his development. Good things happen to good people and Tim is a GREAT person. This will not be the last time a Vollaro/Somers youth wrestler will be chosen as wrestler of the month. Tim is a quiet hard-nosed kid who has the full support of his family, the Vollaro's have had such a large impact at the club, and it is very rare not to have at least one of the Vollaro boys at a NE ETC training session. Tim's Mom will do what ever it takes to keep the doors of the NE ETC open for her boys as well as all the other wrestlers that make up the Northeast Elite Training Center (her and I shared that bond), As Tim and I will soon share a common bond, we will both miss his training partner as he heads off to college to continue his wrestling career at Bucknell University. Tim represents a lot of people that have put in a lot of time and through Tim's efforts he has made us all proud! I don't show much emotion but during next years wrestling season during one of Tim's matches as I sit in the stands I will smile and think of Tim and Mike, hard work and good people and I will quietly think it was all worth it! Congratulations Tim you have my respect and admiration, you have become a fine young man and I will be there for you for years to come! Tim was recommended to me by our second in command Coach Malone who has been just as much a part of Tim's continued development as any of us. Coach Malone and the Malone family have been there for Tim (and all the rest of us) and I could not agree more with Coach Malone's choice for the wrestler of the month for June. I am glad that Coach Malone chose Tim; I must admit I take Tim's work ethic for granted (we have so much more to do!) Thanks Coach Malone you made me realized all our hard work is working! Will Chowanec
Midget 70lb
Age: 10

Will has shown in and out of the room that is is one tough wrestler. His dedication to the sport is second to none, he breaths eats and sleeps wrestling. Besides me he spends the most time at the Northeast Elite Training Center and if any of you where at the Eastern Nationals you know how tenacious Will can be, losing his first match to the eventually champ and wrestling all the way back, 8 matches to take a hard fought third is my kind of wrestling, that is what being a Northeast Elite Wrestlers is all about! Will comes at you hard (as most of his wrestling partners will tell you) but he also can take a butt whipping and not so much as shed a tear. Plain and simple Will is a wrestler and a Northeast Elite Wrestler at that and when it’s all said and done it’s a safe bet he will also be one of our most accomplished! Will is one of the reason I am still in the game and I know he is counting on me to help him achieve his goals and as long as the wrestling gods allow me too I will be there for Will and all the others.

Cody Keane
Junior 66lb
Age: 12
Son of: Renee and John
Bothers and sisters: Sydney, Ridley, Tyler
Attends School at: Glastonbury CT, Grade 6
Favorite sport is: Wrestling

other interests are: Lacrosse, Soccer, running

Cody is one tough kid, he's a machine when it comes to drilling, wrestling live, sprints, he leaves it all on the mat. One of the first to show up for a training session and one of the last to leave. All of Cody's partners will agree with me when it comes to wrestling him in a live go he won't quit, he just keeps coming at you. Cody might have an off night every now and then and I can see how much it bothers him not to be on his A game. He is very aware of where he wants the sport of wrestling to take him and he's more than willing to put in the time and hard work to reach his goals. As with the past wrestlers of the month Cody has a very supportive and loving family. The Keane's are a welcome sight at the Northeast Elite Training Center and we are thankful for there support and dedication. Cody is a twin and his brother Tyler is also a force at the NE ETC. It's a proven fact that twins make great wrestlers and these too will be added to that list. Cody is a caring and thoughtful young man that treats everyone with respect and it goes without saying he has earned mine. Coach Powers

Nick Perrotta
Middle School 70lb
Age: 12
Son of: Dan & Lisa Perrotta, 2 older brothers
Attends School at: Fitch Middle School, Groton CT, Grade 6
Favorite sport is: Wrestling

other interests are: Baseball, dirt bikes, horror movies & video games
Nick plays the guitar & trumpet. He collects trivia-sports records, movie facts, and Guiness world record trivia. He is a high honor student!
Coach Powers Comments on Nick
Nick knows that it’s what you have to give of yourself during the 2 hour training sessions that makes all of his success during his matches possible. Nick wins this award not so much that he had a great month in competition but because he did the hard work to make sure he would have a better chance at being successful in post season this year. I don’t cut Nick much slack when he’s training and don’t plan on cutting him any in the near future. Like the rest of you I see Nick as what he can be and if he continues to
love the sport and pays his dues I will continue to provide him and anyone like him with the best possible training and wrestling opportunities for years to come. I almost didn’t choose Nick for this award because he has so much more work to do, but for the month of February he represents all that the Northeast Elite Training Center stands for! Nick gets it done in the class room and on the mat and that is what The Northeast Elite Training Center/ Northeast Elite Wrestling Club is all about! Nick is a gentleman and wise beyond his years he is blessed to have the full support of his Family and has the commitment of The Northeast Elite Wrestling Club on and off the mat as well. Congratulations Nick you earned it!! Coach P

Jake Madnick
Midget 55lb
Age: 8
Son of:  Marc & Allene Madnick & 2 older sisters.
Attends School at: Eastbury School, Glastonbury CT
Grade: 2
Started wrestling at the Hebron youth program
Favorite Sport is wrestling, also plays football & lacrosse.

Coach Powers comments on Jake:

Picking Jake as the first ever NE ETC wrestler of the month sets the bar high for future candidates. I am a big Jake Madnick fan for a lot of reasons. But the number one reason is when I watch Jake train I see an athlete that the sport of wrestling is lucky to have. It is very rare that someone as young as Jake has the focus and determination that Jake demonstrates when he trains. Jake's award can easily be shared with his family, it is obvious he has the support of his whole family, which to their credit have done a fantastic job raising a fine young man that is a pleasure to be around on and off the mat! I look forward to picking out next months wrestler of the month which will not be an easy task due to the fact we have quite of few Jake Madnick's training at the Northeast Elite Training Center.

Good Luck to all, Coach Powers
